From the existence of a Talayotic, archaeologic site, we can see that this area has been inhabited for thousands of years. This wine producing region managed to recover after the devastation caused from the grape Phylloxera in the mid 1800´s, and many of Mallorca´s most important vineyards can again be found here today. Agriculture has always been the main source of industry in Sencelles and fig production and the sale of other dried fruits, in particular, are still of major significance. An important figure for Mallorcan culture was Sister Francinaina Cirer (1781–1855) who was born in Sencelles. In Mallorca she is worshipped for her healing powers and was beatified by Pope John Paul II. The agricultural fair is held in May, and the weekly market is held every Wednesday.
