About Porto Cristo

Charming little fishing village in a natural harbour

Port Cristo translated, means port of Christ. Named during the Christian re-occupation of the island in 1260 AD. Legend tells of a boat found washed-up on the beach which contained a crucifix. Porto Cristo was also the only town in Mallorca to have engaged in the Spanish civil war, when it was captured by the republicans in 1936. The much visited Caves of Drach can be found here, well worth a visit. Along with many beautiful formation, they also have one of the largest underwater lakes in the world. The 10 million year old, Caves of Ham, can be found 1 kilometre to the west of Porto Cristo. Discovered in 1905 by Pedro Santandreu while he was digging for onyx. In 1910, he produced electricity to illuminate the cave, before electric lighting had reached Porto Cristo! The many natural cave formations in this area make it popular with cavers and scuba divers. We also deliver and collect from Palma Airport
